Curriculum

The study program Integrated Academic Studies of Medicine lasts 6 years or 12 semesters. Total number of classes is 6270-6330: 5280-5310 classes of active teaching (2655-2670 classes of lectures, 2055-2130 classes of practice, 210-270 classes of OAC and 300 classes of SRW) and 990-1020 of other classes. The curriculum contains 45 mandatory (total number of ECTS - 324) and 38 elective courses, of which the student chooses 12 (total number of ECTS - 36), and integrates the mandatory realization of clinical practice (total number of ECTS - 4), as well as passing courses Final work - research (ECTS number - 2) and Final work - design and defense (ECTS number - 3), which otherwise belong to the group of mandatory courses.

Active teaching is represented by an average of 29.42 classes per week, i.e. 14.79 classes of lectures, 11.67 classes of practice, 1.26 classes of OAC and 1.67 classes of SRW on average, on a weekly basis. In order to balance the workload, the number of ECTS per semester ranges from 26 to 34.

The study program has a total of 49 one-semester and 8 two-semester courses. As part of the realization of the study program, students attend: in the first semester, 5 mandatory courses and 1 elective (out of 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 24-26 classes per week and achieve 28 ECTS; in the second semester, 3 mandatory courses and 1 elective (out of 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 26 classes per week and achieve 32 ECTS; in the third semester, 3 mandatory (of which one is two-semester) and 1 elective (of the 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 25 classes per week and achieve 28 ECTS; in the fourth semester, 4 mandatory courses (of which one is a two-semester course) and 1 elective course (of the 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 28 classes per week and achieve 32 ECTS; in the fifth semester, 3 mandatory courses (of which all three are two-semester) and 1 elective (of the 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 26 classes per week and achieve 26 ECTS; in the sixth semester, 4 mandatory courses (of which three are two-semester) and 1 elective (of the 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 32 classes per week and achieve 34 ECTS; in the seventh semester, 4 mandatory courses (of which one is a two-semester course) and 1 elective (out of 2 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 25 classes per week and achieve 27 ECTS; in the eighth semester, 4 mandatory courses (one of which is two-semester) and 1 elective (out of 3 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 33 classes per week and achieve 33 ECTS; in the ninth semester, 4 mandatory courses (of which two are two-semester) and 1 elective (out of 5 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 28 classes per week and achieve 28 ECTS; in the tenth semester, 4 mandatory courses (of which two are two-semester) and 1 elective (out of 3 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 32 classes per week and achieve 32 ECTS; in the eleventh semester, 7 mandatory courses (of which one is a two-semester course) and 1 elective course (out of 7 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 30 classes per week and achieve 24 ECTS; in the twelfth semester, 8 mandatory courses (one of which is a two-semester), which include mandatory clinical practice, research and design and defense of the Final work, and 1 elective (out of 6 offered), with a total fund of active teaching of 46 classes per week and achieve 36 ECTS.

During the IV, V and VI years of studies, students perform professional practice in teaching bases in clinical courses: Internal medicine, Infectious diseases, Pediatrics, Surgery, Gynecology and obstetrics, Physical medicine and rehabilitation, Emergency medical conditions and Geriatrics, and in the summer semester of the VI year they carry out clinical practice lasting 330 classes. During the XII semester, the student has 300 classes of study research work and 90 classes of scientific research work, the outcome of which is the preparation and defense of the Final work.

The most important teaching methods are: lectures illustrated with slides and video clips, work in a small group, demonstration and independent performance of laboratory and clinical skills. All forms of active teaching are based on interactive teaching, which is characterized by discussions about the problem that is the subject of the teaching unit, by presenting a personal position supported by theoretical or experiential argumentation, by noticing dilemmas related to the set topic and solving them. Working in a small group, as an important method of a modern approach to the teaching process, implies a maximum number of 80 students in lectures, 15 students in the group for practical teaching in pre-clinical courses, i.e. 7 in clinical courses. The student must master all clinical skills to the expected level of competence during the course as a condition for taking the final exam.

The total engagement of students through active teaching and other classes is expressed by the number of 360 ECTS. The implementation of ECTS was carried out according to a non-modularized system in which each course can have a different number of credits, so that the total number of credits in one academic year is 60. Within each course, teaching activities relevant to achieving the goal and outcome of the course and the time required for each teaching activity are defined, so that the total work engagement of students corresponds to the number of credits belonging to the course. The student achieves the credits provided for the specific subject after passing the final exam, and the conditions for passing each individual course are defined in the Rulebook on the organization and conduct of teaching at the study program of Integrated academic studies of medicine at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Kragujevac, as well as the course book.

The course book contains a detailed description of the course: title, type of course, semester of study, number of ECSC, teacher's name, course objective with expected outcomes, knowledge and competences, prerequisites for attending the course, content, recommended literature, methods of teaching, method of checking knowledge and evaluation. The sequence of courses in the study program is organized so that the knowledge needed for subsequent courses is acquired in previously completed courses. The structure of the study program is defined with 74.1% scientific and professionally-applied and 25.9% general educational and theoretical-methodological, from the total number of ECTS of the study program, which is in accordance with the set criteria.

The electivity factor according to the positions where the student chooses courses amounts to 10.69% of the total number of ECTS, which is in accordance with the set criteria for the field of medical sciences. The list of elective courses contains 3.17 times more courses than the number of elective courses: the student chooses 12 of the 38 offered elective courses.

At the beginning of the studies, each student is assigned a tutor, from the teachers and associates. The tutor's task is to continuously monitor and guide the work and progress of students in a certain year of study throughout the school year.

The student completes the studies after passing all the exams foreseen in the curriculum, completing practice and defending the Final work.
